Fall of 2005 was beautiful. The old Pit Bull and her friend just wanted to go for walk so off they went. Apparently stray dogs are not allowed to roam, and when picked up they go to jail. Alone and scared the two girls found themselves in a world of hurt. Not only did they not have tags, but one of them was a 'feared' breed. Pit Bulls are labeled by idiots as 'dangerous' and old Pit Bull doesn't stand much chance of ever getting out of a shelter alive. Thankfully the old girl ended up in a shelter that cared about Pit Bulls, thankfully they call rescues. We went to pull two dogs that day, but we left with three. Having an older female Pit Bull myself, I just couldn't leave the old dog behind that day. The shelter named her 'Summer'. We brought her into our rescue, we loved her and cared for her and waited for a home to come along and adopt her. Summer was fine with other dogs, and cats. She was a total love bug full of life. When a foster home opened up we were excited. Summer was going into a home. She would be loved; she would have kids to play with and a bed at night. What we didn't know then, but do now, is that someone else needed Summer as much as Summer needed her. Lacy, a darling, and somewhat stubborn child has had sleeping problems her whole life. At five years of age she still had very vivid nightmares, she would wake her parents and want to sleep with them. Sleep in the Clark home was getting difficult. While Jesseca was able to get Lacy to at least sleep through the night in her own bed, she could not even as a mom, stop the nightmares. Winter time brought not only the cold and the damp, but it brought a wayward Pit Bull to the Clarks home. Summer with her bright smile, her happy ways, and her clever attitude melted into the Clark family like she had lived there forever. She took to the kids, but especially to Lacy. And what no amount of training or expense could do, Summer stopped the nightmares. Never alone at night now, Summer sleeps on the foot of the bed. The old Pit Bull took it upon herself to help the child. As if she actually knew, Summer chose to sleep with Lacy. And what started as a foster dog has become a family member. There is no price tag on the love of a dog. How Summer knew what to do, is beyond me. And while others try to ban her breed, fight to destroy them, wish to tear them from the families that love them; we will stand up for them. And, when and if they try to ban Summer in her home town in Washington, I want to look the cruel person in the eye when they try to remove Summer from Lacy's grip! And when you wish to ask someone their opinion on breed specific legislation..........I want you to call Lacy Clark, ask her opinion, and you will have your answer. ...........................................................
